A visit to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park can be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Waking up at a hotel by the volcano and having direct access to its trails is one of the best ways to take advantage of this spectacular natural phenomenon. But there are many hotels to choose from and deciding which is the best can be tricky.

Volcano Village Lodge
Volcano Village Lodge is an historic retreat with 33 rooms, 10 cabins and 16 campsites located within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is not a place for the faint of heart; you’re sleeping on the edge of an active volcano in a wild, natural and cultural landscape 4000 feet above sea level.
The hotel’s rooms are fairly simple by National Park Lodge check out this lodge by the volcano standards, but they offer everything you need for a comfortable stay. The rooms have a small balcony to enjoy the stunning volcano views, and each room has an ensuite bathroom with tub, shower and toilet. There’s also a mini fridge, coffee/tea maker and flat-screen TV.
If you’re looking for a little extra luxury, the hotel offers several suites. These larger rooms have a sitting area with sofa and the added benefit of a second bedroom. These are available in the main lodge and in the outside Garden rooms.
One of the highlights of staying at Volcano Village is having access to their extensive community facilities. There’s a well-stocked library so you can curl up by the fireplace with a good book, a cinema room and a games room. You can also borrow binoculars from the front desk to see the gorgeous quetzals and hummingbirds in the surrounding forest.
There are several things to do in the nearby area of the National Park, including hiking the trails around the volcano and visiting the lava tube. And, of course, there’s a full breakfast and lunch each day served in the hotel restaurant.
