Rough-in is the stage where all the pipes for a new bathroom are installed and positioned before any walls are closed, floors are poured, or fixtures are set. Everything happens inside the framing: the drain lines, the water supply, and the vents that let the whole system breathe. Getting the measurements right at this point matters more than almost anything else, because once the drywall goes up and the tile is set, correcting a misplaced pipe means tearing back into finished work.

The dimensions used during rough-in are dictated by the fixtures you plan to install. A toilet flange typically centers about 12 inches from the finished wall. A shower drain sits where the base or the mortar bed will direct water toward it. Sink drains and supply lines land at standard heights that leave room for the vanity and the trap. Because these numbers are tied to specific products, choosing your toilet, tub, and vanity before the rough-in begins saves a lot of guesswork.
Supply And Drain Lines
Two separate systems run to every fixture. The supply lines bring pressurized hot and cold water in, usually through half-inch or three-quarter-inch pipe, and the drain lines carry waste away using gravity. Supply lines are the smaller, simpler half of the job; they can bend around obstacles and run almost anywhere as long as they reach the fixture at the correct spot. Drain lines are the demanding part, because they have to slope.
Drainpipes need a consistent downward pitch, generally a quarter inch of drop per foot of run, so waste flows away without pooling. Too little slope and solids settle; too much and water races ahead of the solids and leaves them behind. That slope requirement is why the location of a new bathroom is so tied to where the main drain sits. A bathroom directly over a basement or crawl space gives a plumber easy room to route pipe, while one on a slab or a far corner of the house takes more planning. Venting The Fixtures
Every drain needs a vent. An empty trap lets sewer gas back into the room. Vents solve this by connecting the drain system to open air, usually through a pipe that rises up through the roof, so the pressure stays balanced and the traps hold their water seal.
Each fixture generally needs venting within a certain distance of its trap, and there are several ways to accomplish it. A dedicated vent runs its own line up to the roof. A wet vent uses the drainpipe of one fixture to vent another. Where running a vent all the way through the roof is impractical, an air admittance valve can sometimes serve, though local code governs where those are allowed. Planning the vent layout alongside the drains keeps the whole rough-in coherent instead of a patchwork of afterthoughts.
Tying Into Existing Systems
A new bathroom rarely stands alone. Its drains and vents have to connect to the pipes already in the house, and that connection point often determines how involved the project becomes. If the existing main drain runs close by with capacity to spare, the tie-in is straightforward. If the nearest line is undersized or awkwardly located, the plumber may need to open floors or walls to reach a workable junction.
Older homes around central Arkansas can add wrinkles, from cast iron drains that need special couplings to existing venting that has to be reworked to serve the added load.
